Bývalý eurokomisař je podezírán z nákupů voucherů za 1 € až 100 €, které lze převádět na účet Národní loterie, uvádí zdroj obeznámený s touto záležitostí. Reynders pomocí loterijního účtu a hotovosti údajně hrál loterijní hry a převáděl na své soukromé konto takto vyprané peníze.
To vyšetřování trvá sice už měsíce, ale prokurátoři čekali až do neděle, kdy uplynulo Reyndersovo funkční období v Eurokomisi, což rovněž znamená vypršení jeho EU imunity.
Reynders sloužil jako eurokomisař spravedlnosti v letech 2019 až 2024. Předtím v letech 1999 až 2019 měl řadu prominentních funkcí v belgické vládě včetně ministra zahraničí, obrany a financí. Během jeho působnosti ve vládě k tomu patřil dohled nad belgickou Státní loterií.
Mediální zprávy naznačují, že jednou z prohledávaných nemovitostí byl i Reyndersův soukromý dům. Tento bývalý eurokomisař byl až do úterního večera policií vyslýchán, nebyl však zadržen.
Na podzim 2019 zveřejnila belgická média krátký rozhovor s bývalým agentem belgického zpravodajství, který Reynderse obviňoval z korupce a praní peněz.
Prokurátor však tento případ ve stejném měsíci zrušil, když se mu nedařilo zjistit trestný čin.
„Reynders údajně s praním peněz začal, když byl ještě aktivní v Belgické politice, nebyl však už šéfem Národní loterie. Je podezřelý, že v těchto praktikách pokračoval i ve funkci komisaře,“ referuje Follow the Money (Sleduj peníze).
Reynders byl zaníceným kritikem Orbánova Maďarska, slibujícím, že bude pokračovat v blokování asi 19 miliard €, i když se chystá opustit svou funkci eurokomisaře.
V červenci Remix News referoval, jak Reynders otevřeně prohlašoval, že Maďarsku by mohli zmrazit více miliard z fondů, s tvrzením: „Eurokomise nevylučuje uplatnění zavazující podmínky pro udělení kohezních dotací kvůli (maďarskému) Zákonu na ochranu suverenity.“
